Rights Through Research

Subheading to follow

image UCL has a global reputation as a research power house that is focused on global citizenship, transforming the world and delivering solutions that address the major challenges facing humanity. UCLSHRP Research is an integral step towards achieving our overall objective promoting rights awareness, discussion and action in order to foster a human rights culture.

There are two new research projects running this year:

Equal Rights Trust

Equal Rights Trust is an independent international charity focused on promoting equality as a human right and combating discrimination.  UCLSHRP is working in collaboration with ERT on a global equality assessment report.  The project aims to document the prevalence of inequality and discrimination on a country by country basis.  UCLSHRP volunteer researchers are in charge of compiling background information about specific countries and describing significant issues of inequality or discrimination within that country.  A legal analysis of the international and domestic laws and policies on equality and discrimination is then conducted to make evident the gaps between law and practice.  Final reports will be published on the ERT website.
Aside from being named contributors on the final country reports, UCLSHRP researchers gain valuable experience and intensive in-house training from ERT.  This project is ideal for any students interested in equality as a fundamental human right and is suitable for both law and non-law researchers. Abolition of Freedom and Welfare Audit

We believe that we can have a voice in ensuring an appropriate protection of human rights in our country. This project is aimed to strengthen and complement existing human rights scrutiny of legislation by Parliament and civil society. It certainly involves assessing whether UK legislation is compatible with UK human rights obligations and recommending amendments to legislation to achieve human rights compliance.

In addition to our continuing research from previous years on the following topics:

UCL Law Faculty Research - Research assistance is currently being provided to a number of UCL legal academics.

imageLaw Society of England and Wales - UCL SHRP researchers operate the “Lawyers at Risk” Intervention Action Team at the Law Society, monitoring abuses of human rights lawyers on an international scale divided into regional research teams and providing legal research and analysis. UCL SHRP researchers also collaborate with rights barristers and solicitors at the Law Society in the drafting of Law Society legal interventions on behalf of “Lawyers at Risk”.  You can find out more about our work in this area on the Intervention Action Team page

imageUniversities Allied for Essential Medicines - UCL SHRP researchers are collaborating with UCL Medsin to research and review the licensing policy of UCL, and other London Universities, regarding essential medicines, to recommend and advise on a policy that pursues our vision of global health equality.
