UCL ECHR Moot

Arguing both sides of the law of human rights

imageWelcome to the official site of the European Court of Human Rights Moot Court Competition.

The 2011 European Court of Human Rights Moot Court Competition is the latest edition of the UCL ECHR Moot. During the 2011 Preliminary Phase, six oral rounds were successfully held in Bentham House (Jan. 20, 2011). For further info please take a tour to our updates section.

Open both to undergraduate as well as graduate UCL students; the ECHR Moot has been annually organized for the past three consecutive years by the UCL Student Human Rights Programme in collaboration with the UCL Institute for Human Rights.

Traditionally the preliminary phases, along with the Semi Finals, are held in UCL. A high esteemed bench is secured for these rounds including Law Professors and Legal Academics as well as UK Judges and/or Lawyers with a particular expertise on ECHR.

It is the finalists’ privilege however to be arguing their case before the actual European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and be judged by their Excellencies ECtHR judges.

Participants are given the chance to research and argue ECHR Law in the most edifying and rewarding context of a Moot Court Competition. To this respect we have prepared a guide to mooting, which is available on our How to Moot page. Here, you can find information on mooting techniques and also links to other sites providing practical information and advice.

Context-wise, oral pleadings are based on a hypothetical case, which is different for each phase and predominantly inspired by contemporary issues that judicial practice renders challenging or actual cases pending before the ECtHR. You might find our How to Research page of particular value towards getting started in ECHR law.
