The 2011 UCL European Court of Human Rights Moot was for the third consecutive year successfully organized by the UCL Students’ Human Rights Programme in collaboration with the UCL Institute for Human Rights.MORE.

The UCL Student Human Rights Programme Executive Elections!

The UCL SHRP is holding elections for its Executive Committee and we would like everyone who has an interest in human rights to apply!

We are a vibrant and active Programme with a wide range of activities and projects. We aim to raise awareness about human rights, instigate debate and inspire action. The Executive Committee manages the Programme’s activities, and supervises the Coordinators of specific projects.

Please be aware that the positions on the Executive Committee are open to all postgraduate students who will still be studying in London in the next academic year (September 2011-March 2012).

The positions available are:
President
Vice-President
Secretary
Treasurer
Relations and Sponsorship Officer

1) An up-to-date CV
2) A covering letter detailing:
a) Evidence of a proactive nature either from prior involvement with the Programme or other societies/organisations (to include details of any previous leadership roles and administrative/organisational skills)
b) Your interest in human rights
c) Your interest in the Programme and your preference for no more than 2 positions

The deadline for applications is 6pm on the 21st May. Once we have received your applications you may be shortlisted for a brief interview with our Selection Panel. Once the Selection Panel have made their decisions on the candidates, a UCL SHRP AGM will vote on whether to ratify the Panel’s choices.

The Selection Panel is a group of UCL SHRP’s members who volunteered and were chosen by the current Executive to form the Panel. It will also have a representative from the Institute for Human Rights. We realise that the timing of our elections is inappropriate due to exams and coursework deadlines. However the UCL SHRP has recently redrafted its Constitution and amended the election procedure, which has unfortunately delayed this call for applications.

The UCL Student Human Rights Programme (UCLSHRP) is seeking volunteers to research and draft reports on equality and discrimination with the Equal Rights Trust (ERT), in different countries.
All volunteers will receive training and will be given detailed guidance to follow on how to research and write the reports. It is expected that the work will be conducted June-August 2011 with flexibility to fit around course requirements.  The work can be undertaken remotely, from home. The reports which are produced will contribute to larger reports published as part of ERT projects.  All volunteers will be credited as contributors when the reports are published.  The reports will be published at different times in 2011-12 in line with project requirements. The UCLSHRP ERT Coordinator, and an ERT contact person as well as the ERT project officer for the relevant projects will be available to answer questions and provide feedback.
Research may support ERT projects in any of the following countries: India, Guyana, Indonesia, Sudan, Belarus and Nigeria.

Exceeding all expectations the Semi-Finals proved to be a highly accredited academic event attracting a rather significant audience. The panel of judges included Lord Kerr and highly esteemed practitioners of human rights law such as Ms. J. Kinghan, Mr. S. Ollesson and Ms H. Mountfield. The Semi-Finals were conducted at Bentham House, UCL and were followed by a small reception where Lord Kerr offered a rather intriguing insight to the law profession, discussing also the requirements for pursuing a career at the Bar.
We are most pleased to congratulate the Finalists as announced after the reception:

The Finals are scheduled for the 8th of April in the European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg.

The case of the Semi-Finals which reflected the rather controversial application of the Chagos Islanders before the European Court of Human Rights can be found HERE

The 2011 UCL European Court of Human Rights Moot was for the third consecutive year successfully organized by the UCL Students’ Human Rights Programme in collaboration with the UCL Institute for Human Rights. After two phases of elimination rounds, held at UCL and judged by such distinguished personalities as Lord Kerr, the Finals were conducted at the European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg. The finalists had the privilege to argue before their Excellencies, Judge Chr. Rozakis, Judge D. Spielmann and Judge S. E. Jebbens. A privilege they fully exploited, extracting remarkable comments from the judges.
Having to argue on the hypothetical case of Mr. Efi Altis against VZN and the Plain of Phlegra, the finalists were to prepare two grounds. The first involved Articles 7 and 14 on facts that resembled those of Scoppola (No.2) and the Damjanovic and Maktouf applications. The second involved Articles 4 and 3 of Protocol No. 1, namely forced labour and the prisoners’ right to vote. Mr. Martin Reynolds was awarded Best Oralist, Mr. Azusa Kikuma Second Best Oralist, Miss Sarah Walker Third Best Oralist and Mr. Joseph Markus received an Honorary Mention for making it to the Finals.
The ECtHR Moot which started off as a means to promote awareness of the ECHR has now turned into an established path of communication between academia and the highest level of judiciary. Not only can UCL Law students practice their advocacy skills but they are moreover provided with a chance not afforded in most moots: namely to put their arguments to the test before the actual Court. With even higher aspirations then for the years to come, congratulations to all the participants!

The ECHR Moots Grand Final 2010 is almost upon us! We have our slot scheduled in the Grand Chamber at the ECHR in Strasbourg on Friday 5 March, and will shortly be putting together a schedule of lectures and other ECHR-related activities for Friday 5 and Saturday 6 March. We would like to extend a warm invitation to all supporters of the Programme and encourage you to attend this very special occasion where you will be able to meet judges of the Court and enjoy a weekend in one of Europe’s most attractive cities --- watch this space for more updates soon! ---

Thank you to all who have already volunteered for the Grass Roots project. The training sessions will run as follows: the first training day will be on Monday 25th January 5:30 - 8:30pm, in Room SB1, 188 Tottenham Court Road. This is a ‘Working with Children’ course provided by the VSU. We are aware that some volunteers may have completed the course or one similar before. If you have attended the exact course before it is not necessary for you to do so again but if you have done a similar course, we strongly suggest that you come along to this course also. We are told that ‘light snacks’ will be provided, and I’m sure it will provide a great excuse to grab a drink nearby afterwards, if anyone needs one. If you cannot attend this evening there are also others on Thursday 28th and Thursday 4th February, same time. Please let us know which session you wish to attend by emailing
