UCL: Terrorism and Human Rights in the UK

19th March 2009, 6.30 - 8pm
MLT, Faculty of Laws, UCL
Tagged As: Detention, Terrorism, UK

Speaker: Dan Squires
Dan Squires is a barrister practicing at Matrix Chambers. He specialises in public and human rights law. He has been involved in a number of challenges to terrorism legislation.

Since 9/11 a series of different measures have been taken in the UK to combat terrorism – detention without trial of foreign nationals, control orders, financial sanctions, deportations pursuant to “memoranda of understanding.” This talk will look at the legal challenges that have been brought in the UK and in the European Court of Human Rights to these measures. It will also consider how the legal regimes meant to deal with terrorism, as well as the challenges to them, shape and reflect an understanding of the nature of “terrorism” and the threat that it poses.
