On Thursday 30th a few of us got together for a workshop with the London Guantanamo Campaign, and began to think about ways in which the Programme might be a little more ‘active’ in some areas. Lots of great ideas came out of it, including:
- Creating a database of information about particular subject areas such as extraordinary rendition, that builds on our research projects with a real inter-disciplinary approach - medics to research the effects of e.g. torture, language students to translate documents not in English, lawyers to think about the laws breached and
compensation. - In the context of rendition, stage a kidnapping (with the kidnapped’s consent of course) and see what people’s reactions are.
- Adopt a rendition victim and follow his case.
- Link with the film society to put on topical film viewings.
- Go to lectures in orange jump suits for a week.
If anyone has any creative ideas on activities for the SHRP members over the next academic year, let’s start making them happen!
