Hundreds of Sudanese have been held without charge or access to lawyers following the assault on Khartoum by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). Since the armed assault on 10 May, 50 individuals have been sentenced to death. Many of those released have reported incidents of torture.
Several requests for an investigation into these episodes of torture have been rejected by Sudan’s Anti-Terrorism Special Courts. Amnesty International has voiced concerns that the whereabouts of many of those held is still uncertain, including several women and a nine-month-old child.
